Americans don’t use the word “tram”. I find this horribly disconcerting.

pfft, you shouldn’t! Melburnian trams are way more awesome than those in LA or SF.
What do they call them then?
“Light rail” or “streetcars”. Or worse, just “trains” — when I’m in San Francisco and hear someone say they’re going to Embarcadero Muni station to catch the “N train”, I feel like slapping them.
